If you live in the Coulee Region, you already know — flat yards are the exception, not the rule. The bluffs and rolling terrain that make La Crosse, Onalaska, Holmen, and West Salem so beautiful also create real challenges when it comes to managing your outdoor space. Erosion creeping down a hillside. A backyard that slopes so steeply you can barely use half of it. Water pooling where it shouldn’t after every heavy rain.
A well-built retaining wall can solve all of these problems — and do it in a way that actually adds beauty and value to your property. But how do you know if a retaining wall is the right move for your yard? Here’s what nearly 20 years of building in the Coulee Region has taught us.
Why Retaining Walls Matter in the Coulee Region
Most of the country deals with relatively flat terrain. Here in western Wisconsin, we’re working with bluff country — steep grades, clay-heavy soils, and freeze-thaw cycles that can move the earth beneath your feet (literally). That combination means slopes don’t just sit still. Over time, gravity and water work together to erode hillsides, wash out landscaping, and undermine anything built on or near a grade change.
A retaining wall holds soil in place, redirects water, and creates usable space where there was none. It’s not just a landscaping feature — it’s structural. And when it’s done right, it becomes one of the most striking elements of your outdoor space.
Signs Your Property Needs a Retaining Wall
Not every slope requires a wall, but there are clear signals that one would make a real difference:
- Visible erosion — Soil washing downhill, exposed roots, or landscaping that keeps sliding out of place
- Water runoff issues — Water channeling toward your foundation, pooling in low spots, or creating gullies in your yard
- Unusable slope — A steep section of your yard that’s essentially wasted space because you can’t walk on it, mow it safely, or build on it
- Leaning or failing existing walls — Older walls that are bowing, cracking, or tilting forward under soil pressure
- Plans to build a patio or outdoor living space — If the area you want to use sits on a slope, a retaining wall may be the first step to creating a level surface
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth having a conversation about what a retaining wall could do for your property.
What Goes Into a Retaining Wall That Actually Lasts
Here’s where the difference between a wall that lasts a few years and one that lasts decades comes down to what happens below the surface — the part you’ll never see once the project is finished.
At Believe Hardscape, every retaining wall starts with proper excavation and a compacted aggregate base. We don’t cut corners with the foundation, because a retaining wall that isn’t built on a solid base will eventually shift, lean, or fail. That’s true whether the wall is two feet tall or eight feet tall.
A properly engineered retaining wall includes:
- Excavation to stable subgrade — Removing topsoil and organic material down to stable ground
- Compacted aggregate base — A crushed stone foundation that distributes weight evenly and allows water to drain
- Drainage behind the wall — Gravel backfill and drain tile to relieve hydrostatic pressure (the number one reason retaining walls fail)
- Proper setback on each course — Each row of block steps back slightly to work with gravity instead of fighting it
- Geogrid reinforcement — For taller walls, layers of geogrid anchor the wall into the hillside for structural integrity
Every one of these steps matters. Skip the drainage, and water pressure will push the wall out from behind. Skip the base preparation, and the wall will settle unevenly. We’ve rebuilt walls that other contractors installed without these fundamentals — and it always costs more the second time around.
Retaining Walls as Part of a Bigger Vision
Some of our favorite projects in the La Crosse area combine retaining walls with other outdoor living features. A retaining wall doesn’t have to be a standalone structure — it can be the foundation (literally) for something much more exciting:
- Multi-level patios — Use retaining walls to create terraced outdoor living spaces on a sloped yard, with each level serving a different purpose
- Built-in seating walls — A retaining wall at the right height doubles as extra seating around a fire pit or dining area
- Garden terraces — Step a hillside into flat planting beds that are easier to maintain and more visually striking
- Driveway support — Reinforce a sloped driveway or create a level parking area
- Erosion control with boulders — Natural boulder walls blend with the Coulee Region landscape for a more organic look while still managing soil and water
When you start with the right foundation work, the possibilities open up. A yard that felt unusable becomes the best part of your property.
Natural Stone vs. Manufactured Block — Which Is Right for Your Project?
Both natural stone and manufactured block have their place in retaining wall construction, and the right choice depends on the look you’re going for and the specific demands of your site.
Manufactured block (like Unilock products) offers consistent sizing, engineered interlocking systems, and a wide range of colors and textures. It’s ideal for walls that need precise structural performance, and it pairs beautifully with paver patios and other hardscape features. As a Unilock Authorized Contractor, we have access to their full line of premium wall products.
Natural stone and boulders provide a more rugged, organic aesthetic that fits right in with the bluffs and hillsides of the Coulee Region. Boulder walls work especially well for shorter walls, garden borders, and properties where you want the hardscape to feel like a natural extension of the landscape.
Many of our projects use a combination of both — manufactured block for the structural heavy lifting and natural stone or boulders for accent features and transitions.
What to Expect When You Call
Every retaining wall project at Believe Hardscape starts with a phone consultation. We’ll talk through what’s happening with your property, what you’re hoping to achieve, and whether a retaining wall is the right solution. If it sounds like a good fit for both of us, we’ll schedule an onsite visit to assess the grade, soil conditions, drainage patterns, and any other factors that will shape the design.
From there, you’ll receive a detailed proposal with a clear scope of work. We stand behind every wall we build with our 10-year no sink or settle warranty, because we know the foundation work we put in will hold up through Wisconsin’s toughest seasons.
We also offer financing options, including 12-month same-as-cash, to make it easier to invest in a solution that protects your property for the long term.
